How does Cupping work?

How does cupping work? I get asked this a LOT and understandable because it’s pretty cool 😎

How does it work?

It creates a suction that lifts the fascia, muscles and all the vessels under the skin. This does a few things:

1. creates increased circulation which brings fresh blood and nutrients to the area

2. releases muscle tension

3. stimulates the nervous system and the TCM meridians under the skin to move ‘qi’

4. moves lymph fluid so it can more effectively remove toxic substances and allow fresh lymph fluid to nourish the tissues and support immune function

What about the marks?

These are a result of increased circulation, bringing old blood to the surface to be cleared. The darker the marks the more ‘stagnation’. These fade over 1-2 weeks.

Does it hurt?

Nope, it actually feels good. It’s a tight pulling feeling and feels like it is releasing tension. If it’s pinching it’s too tight or not enough oil on the skin.

What to do after cupping?

Hydrate, stay out of the wind and keep the area covered.

I use this in most treatments especially in the first few because it’s so great to get adequate circulation. It’s also great for muscle tension and pain.

It’s a favourite in the clinic 🙏😍
